Typically, there’s no income requirement to sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or dependent child for PR in Canada, unless the person you’re sponsoring has a dependent child.
However, there are some information concerning finances that potential sponsors and sponsorship partners needs to know:
The Undertaking: Sponsors must enter into a financial agreement with the federal government, called an Undertaking, to take care of their spouse/common-law partner for a minimum of three years. This means to financially cover their accommodation, food, medical expenses (the will be covered under provincial health insurance), transportation, clothing etc. If the Sponsored person ends up applying and receiving social assistance in these three years, the sponsor must reimburse the government for the money given to help take care of the sponsored partner.
Receiving social assistance (welfare) makes the sponsor ineligible to sponsor their spouse/common-law partner.
Proof of Income: Even though there is no minimum income requirement to sponsor one’s spouse/common-law partner, you must prove that you will be able to support your household (according to the number of people in your household, including yourself). This proof can be given through the following suggested documents:
Recent years Notice of Assessments (2 NOCs)
Employment Confirmation letters (Letter from your employer stating when you started, how much you earn, hours you work a week, position, a few duties, on official company letterhead with contact information, and signed by a manager/director).
Recent pay stubs (4)
Bank statements (6 months)
The Low Income Cut Off: (LICO) chart is a good measuring stick to use to determine the minimum you need to earn to support your household, depending on it’s size.

Past Financial Negligence- Those who have not given financial support in past sponsorships, or court-ordered daily child support or alimony payments are not eligible to sponsor their spouse/common-law partner.
